Lowell, N.C., resident Rene Hallstead was recently named the first of four $500 winners in the BAYADA Drive it Home Contest, a yearlong referral-based campaign to recruit high-quality nurses throughout Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

Hallstead, a licensed practical nurse (LPN) with BAYADA in Gastonia, plans to use her winnings to continue pursuing her associate’s degree in nursing to become a registered nurse (RN). “This came at a great, great time,” said Hallstead. “After finishing the fall semester on a BAYADA scholarship, I can guarantee I’ll take courses this summer thanks to this prize.”

“I was ecstatic when I heard Rene won,” said BAYADA Director Megan O’Shields. “She is just phenomenal! She’ll do anything at any time to help anyone. Every client she cares for ends up requesting her the next time around.”

Hallstead primarily cares for eight adult clients with varying degrees of medical need, and has served as a nurse preceptor, or trainer, for the last three years. She coaches new RNs and LPNs on, among other skills, the proper way to care for tracheostomy and ventilator-dependent clients receiving care at home.

“Just like Rene, we know that there are many people out there—even non-health care workers—who have friends, neighbors, and family members who are excellent nurses,” said BAYADA Division Director Virginia Steelman. “Every time they refer a nurse to BAYADA, they can increase their chances of winning $500 and a brand new 2014 Ford Focus!”

This contest is completed. Thank you to everyone who participated.
