Husi Cázares brings purpose, empathy, and a deep sense of connection to every client he serves. As BAYADA’s 2026 Speech Therapist National Hero of the Year, he’s known not just for improving speech—but for helping people understand what’s happening to them so they can believe in recovery again.
That impact is clear in the care he provided to Marco, a veteran whose life had already been shaped by trauma before a stroke left his speech severely impaired. When Husi first met him, Marco wasn’t convinced he needed speech therapy. “I don’t think I need it,” he said, struggling to communicate.
Husi started where he always does—with understanding. He broke down what was happening in Marco’s body in simple, clear terms, explaining how muscles, energy, and repetition all work together in recovery. It wasn’t overwhelming. It made sense.
After just one visit, Marco walked into the bedroom and told his wife, “You’ve got to meet this guy. He explained everything to me. I get it. I understand… and I can get better.”
That moment changed everything.
From there, Husi built consistency into every session, helping Marco retrain his brain through repetition, sequencing, and problem-solving. Each small gain built confidence. Each breakthrough reinforced belief. “He helped bring Marco out of a really dark place,” his wife shared.
What sets Husi apart is how he meets people—not just as clients, but as individuals who deserve to be heard and understood. His approach is shaped by his own journey. Raised in Pisinemo, a village on the Tohono O’odham Nation, Husi was first introduced to speech therapy as a child while learning English. That experience stayed with him, shaping a career grounded in patience, education, and respect for every person’s voice.
His impact reaches far beyond a single home. Families talk about the clarity and hope he brings—even after one visit. “They finally had some hope,” one family member shared after hearing from others he had helped.
For Marco, that hope became something even more powerful. “He is the first person to give me attention to my issues… to explain to me that nothing was wrong with me,” he said. “He brought me back to life.”
