PHILADELPHIA, PAApril 13, 2026 — BAYADA Home Health Care, the nation’s largest independent nonprofit home health care provider, has been named to Modern Healthcare’s list of 2026 Innovators. Notably, BAYADA is the only home care organization recognized, distinguishing it among hospitals, tech giants, and health systems.

The award recognizes BAYADA’s Home Intensive Care Unit (HICU®) program—a first-of-its-kind model that bridges the precarious gap between neonatal/pediatric intensive care (NICU/PICU) discharge and traditional home nursing.

Redefining the Transition to Home: A Distinct Clinical Model

For payers and hospital systems, the "stuck" patient is a chronic challenge. Medically fragile children often remain in ICU beds long after they are clinically stable because the home-based infrastructure to support them doesn’t exist.

BAYADA’s HICU program is a 12-week, stepdown home care solution specifically designed to solve this. It is the only program developed by a home care company that:

  • Deploys critical-care trained pediatric nurses with 24/7 coverage at the start.
  • Safely tapers services as the child stabilizes and the family gains clinical confidence.
  • Integrates high-touch care coordination before and after discharge, including interdisciplinary rounds, seamless equipment setup, and 24/7 clinical backup.

Quantifiable Results for Payers and Health System Partners

The HICU model is both a clinical success and a financial imperative. By moving complex nursing care safely into the home setting, BAYADA has delivered measurable impact since the launch of the program.

HICU outcomes to-date:

  • 83 children transitioned home safely
  • 6,307 hospital days avoided
  • 25% reduction in hospital readmission rate
  • $250,000 average cost savings per patient per year
  • 97.6% reliability rate

The Human Impact: Drew’s Story

Beyond the data, the HICU program offers families a lifeline. Andrea Smith’s son, Drew, was born preterm at 24 weeks and was dependent on a ventilator. While other providers couldn't offer the necessary level of home care in their area, the HICU program stepped in to help bring him home from the hospital.

During his 12 weeks of HICU support, Drew avoided 84 days in the hospital, saving $388,000 in total health care costs, all while meeting every developmental milestone in the comfort of his home in the Philadelphia area. "He has never been back to the hospital—no hiccups, no ER visits," said Andrea. "They saved my baby."

Advancing a National Culture of Innovation

Modern Healthcare’s recognition underscores BAYADA’s commitment to innovation to bridge systemic gaps. Rather than relying on static care models, BAYADA has convened a multidisciplinary advisory council of hospital leaders and parents who help to regularly improve its HICU care delivery model.

In partnership with Lehigh University, this research-backed model is now scaling nationally. BAYADA is currently expanding its footprint in the Boston area, Virginia, and Massachusetts to support hospital and payer partners looking to raise the standard for pediatric home care.
