The BAYADA Pediatrics Registered Nurse (RN) Residency Program recently earned accreditation with distinction as a Practice Transition Program by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC). BAYADA is the only home care company to achieve accreditation.

BAYADA Pediatrics, a specialty practice of BAYADA Home Health Care, provides nursing care at home and school for children from birth through adolescence with a wide range of complex medical needs. BAYADA introduced the RN Residency Program in 2014 with the goal of preparing recent nurse graduates to transition into a professional nursing role in pediatric home care. In 2017, BAYADA expanded the Residency Program to include recent Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) graduates.

“We voluntarily applied for accreditation, which involves a rigorous evaluation by the ANCC,” said BAYADA Pediatrics Division Director Michael Ward, who was instrumental in developing the program. “The ANCC deemed our program as the highest quality and worthy of public confidence.”

The Residency Program was developed to help BAYADA care for more pediatric patients and to help recruit more nurses to fill shifts that are open as a result of the nationwide nursing shortage “The residency program bridges the gap between the classroom and the real world, helping recent graduates develop confidence in their clinical skills and judgement, enhance their critical thinking, and refine their time management skills, all in a safe, nurturing environment,” said BAYADA Pediatrics Director of Pediatric Clinical Education Margit Moran,  who developed the program’s core curriculum.

The Residency Program includes a 4-week, intensive training period, followed by an 11-month residency period where nurses will receive ongoing support, mentoring, and career development from tenured nurses. At the program’s completion, nurses will be prepared to independently care for pediatric patients in their own homes.

The program's features include:

  • An RN clinical manager to mentor residents and provide one-on-one support
  • Preceptors to facilitate on-the-job training
  • Participation in clinical training on topics related to pediatric home care nursing
  • Clinical rotation in clients’ homes
  • Classroom learning
  • Simulation lab training using state-of-the-art manikins to mimic real-life medical emergencies.
