Home health care is the purest form of caregiving. As a pediatric nurse, you get to treat the whole person, holistically. Sometimes, it can feel like you’re treating the whole family. It’s not easy for parents of a child with complex medical needs. It’s demanding, it can be emotionally exhausting, and it’s so important to not feel alone. I encourage families to take care of themselves when our nurse is there. Once trust is established, by all means, you’ve got to take advantage of it. Get out of the house. Do whatever makes you happy and refills your tank.

Trust is a Three-Way Street

Likewise, we’re always investing in our nurses to make sure they never feel alone. They get comprehensive classroom and simulation lab training on all the necessary medical equipment, and our Preceptor Education Program makes sure they feel comfortable on the job with an experienced mentor before they’re ever asked to work independently. Clinical managers are only a phone call away from our nurses 24/7, and the personalized zone tools for each patient help guide nurses’ decision-making to get a client back to their normal baseline if they experience a change in health status.

It’s like a three-way street with trust as the foundation: Families trust our nurses to care for their children—nurses trust us to provide them the training and support they need to do their jobs—and we trust our nurses to maintain the high standards we set.

A wonderful RN on our care team, Chantel (who happens to be a clinical educator and clinical manager now)—who came along with our pediatric patient Kasey when she switched from another agency—once told me she was so glad to join BAYADA because of our high standards.

Yes, it’s true, we do have high standards, including contractual standards for conduct, honesty, and ethics. To me, each employee is so valuable that I see my primary role as an educator as one who helps all new and existing employees provide the highest standard of care—to every client, every day. That’s why our clients trust us to not only come into their homes, but into their lives.
