Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Michele Bryson-Ghent was recognized as the national LPN Hero of the Year by BAYADA Home Health Care, a leading provider of in-home care. Chosen from among thousands of nominees, Bryson-Ghent, from BAYADA’s Rock Hill, SC office, accepted the prestigious award for exemplifying the highest standards of care before more than 2,400 employees at the company’s annual awards meeting, held virtually in light of the COVID-19 virus on September 24. The award was presented by BAYADA CEO, David Baiada.
Bryson-Ghent’s pediatric clients and their families refer to her as their own personal “Mary Poppins”, because they never know what magic she is going to pull out of her bag.
“Michele loves being a home care nurse for children with serious diagnoses because she gets to be inventive, one-on-one, and share with local families the joy of every developmental milestone,” said Rock Hill Director Jenni Cairns. “Whether she is painting a custom Ninja Turtle helmet or teaching a child sign language to communicate for the first time, nursing is so much more than a job for Michele, it’s a creative adventure.”
BAYADA provides nursing care at home and school for children from birth through adolescence with a wide range of complex diagnoses. Nurses receive age and diagnosis-specific training, including tracheostomy and ventilator care.
“The reason I love being a pediatric nurse is because you don’t only get to do your nursing side,” shared Bryson-Ghent. “You get to be creative, you get to be a teacher, and then when you find out that these children reached the goals that you had set for them it’s something money can’t buy.”
During the live telecast, Bryson-Ghent fought back tears as she expressed her appreciation to her clients, her family, and for her colleagues who she describes as the backbone of the Rock Hill office.
“Thank you for entrusting me and believing that I was making a difference,” she said. “BAYADA is a special breed of company. It’s a place where you can go above and beyond and you can be a hero for these children.”
The Hero of the Year Award is part of BAYADA’s Hero Program, which allows the company to recognize and reward those who exceed the highest standards of quality care and work ethic at an office, division, and national level. Heroes can be nominated by their colleagues and clients. All BAYADA employees and clients can nominate any registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, home health aide, or other professional caregivers.
“I am beyond impressed with our inspiring heroes this year, as I am every year, but especially in light of these challenging times during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Baiada. “This year’s heroes truly show what it means to deliver care with excellence, reliability and compassion, and I am grateful for their hard work.”
