In honor of Autism Acceptance Month in April, BAYADA Home Care has partnered with the Autism Society of Hawai’i as a corporate sponsor. BAYADA offers services throughout Hawai’i for individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities at home, school, in the community, and in their centers.
“We are so grateful to BAYADA for their ongoing support,” said President of the Autism Society of Hawai’i Board of Directors Dennis Maher. “Their generous donation will help us ignite change through improved opportunities in inclusive education, competitive employment, accessible housing, affordable health care, and long-term service and supports.”
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), autism affects an estimated one in 54 children and one in 45 adults in the United States.
“The Autism Society of Hawai’i and BAYADA have a shared mission to improve the lives of individuals affected with autism and to help them reach their highest potential,” said BAYADA Behavioral Health Director of Clinical Operations Kristen Koba-Burdt. “We are proud to partner with an organization that provides such valuable support and resources for individuals with autism and their families.
BAYADA offers applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy for the treatment of autism and related learning or social disorders to reduce challenging behaviors and increase functional skills. Interventions based on the principals of ABA are evidence-based, with clearly defined procedures to address social, communication, behavioral, and self-help deficits.
The Autism Society of Hawai’i actively hosts a number of outreach activities. Among its initiatives for families are support groups, sensory-friendly films, educational webinars, a virtual book club, drive-by celebrations, and on-going digital communications regarding community resources and information on legal, education, health, travel, and government issues.
