BAYADA Director of Infection Prevention Susan Engel, RN, BSN is the 2021 winner of the prestigious Ann Baiada Award for Excellence in Nursing Leadership given by BAYADA Home Health Care, a leading provider of in-home care. Engel was surprised at home during a livestreamed annual awards event on May 20—before and online audience of more than 2,600 employees and honored for exemplifying the highest standards of nursing excellence and her dedication to nursing leadership.

Engel started her BAYADA career journey in August 2000 as a clinical manager in Philadelphia. She joined the Nursing Office in Moorestown, NJ as a clinical support specialist in 2003. She soon earned a promotion to infection prevention program manager, then to director of infection prevention. In her current role she is responsible for the development and implementation of policies and procedures to keep the company’s clinicians, clients, and administrative employees protected from the spread of infectious diseases.

During the last, incredibly difficult year, Engel played an integral role on the BAYADA COVID-19 response team, ensuring the company implemented the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) ever-changing COVID-19 safety protocols in each of its 347 offices in 22 states.

“Susan, there are no words to begin to thank you for taking BAYADA through the storm of COVID,” said former BAYADA Director Ann Baiada, RN, CRRN, who is now retired. “You are the epitome of inspiration, empowerment, and support. You challenged us to keep our clients first and ensure that at every turn, our employees were protected.”

Ann Baiada, along with BAYADA Founder and Chairman Mark Baiada and other close colleagues, surprised Engel during the live event broadcast to present her with the coveted recognition.

“The core of who I am and how I lead begins with my heart so full of compassion and the desire to help others. That is why BAYADA has been such a wonderful place to work these past 20 years,” said Engel, who was overcome with emotion as she accepted the award. “What has given me the most satisfaction during this pandemic is truly helping other clinical leaders, field employees, and all office employees to understand the science, relieve fears, and do everything possible to keep our clients and employees safe.”

Ann Baiada expressed her pride for everything that Engel has accomplished during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“In celebrating Susan, we are celebrating every nursing leader in this organization who followed her lead and ensured that we lived our mission to the fullest every single day,” said Ann Baiada. “She fulfilled my legacy in the most committed and beautiful way, and I thank her and I honor her.”

Engel credits her peers and BAYADA’s leadership for helping the company get through the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It is truly such an incredible honor to receive the Ann Baiada Award,” said Engel. “I am proud to share this recognition with the many colleagues and BAYADA’s senior leadership team who worked alongside me to ensure the safety of our clients and employees was the highest priority.”
