The collaboration will enable health systems to offer a full range of specialty care at home, from post-acute rehab to acute hospitalization, paramedicine, palliative, and hospice.

Philadelphia, PA, March 15, 2023BAYADA Home Health Care (BAYADA), a leading nonprofit home health care provider, is excited to announce its collaboration with Maribel Health (Maribel) to launch a new platform that will enhance and expand acute care offerings in the home setting, advancing a shared mission to make the home the center of the health system.

Many hospitals are struggling to meet inpatient capacity needs. Adding to the challenge, an increasing number of individuals are living with serious diagnoses or recovering from surgery, injury, or other acute events. These patients often rely on hospitals for ongoing testing, treatment, and interventions – requiring visits that risk disruptions in care, complications, and worse outcomes.

Advanced care at home can free up hospital bed days through earlier discharges and avoidance of inpatient stays, while improving clinical outcomes and patient experience. When more care needs can be met at home, risks such as hospital-born infection are reduced, and patients and their caregivers can spend more time focused on healing. By integrating clinical data and care logistics, health systems can deliver a seamless care journey and exceptional outcomes for their patients.

This is the shared vision of BAYADA and Maribel leadership. Maribel has assembled a team of experienced operators, clinicians, and technologists, with a track record of successful care delivery transformation, including:

  • Cofounder Ron Paulus, MD, former health system CEO and industry expert
  • Cofounder Adam Groff, MD, hospitalist and home and community entrepreneur
  • Tim Dybvig, experienced health care software product leader
  • Karen Titchener, MSN, NP, global hospital-at-home expert and program creator
  • Greg Goodman, MD, experienced hospital-at-home physician
  • Sharon Vogel, MBA, home care operations and strategy executive
  • Josh Haselkorn, home care entrepreneur and former health data science leader

As a turnkey solution for providing services like hospital-at-home care, the Maribel platform combines technology, scalable clinical models, and operational management services to fill gaps in the current infrastructure and create the capacity needed for health systems to meet rapidly growing demographic demands. As the platform evolves, Maribel is aiming to be able to offer health systems the opportunity to transfer the financial risk of managing care for a hospital patient to Maribel, which will provide better quality outcomes at a reduced cost to the health system.

These capabilities and more will help to meet several critical needs being expressed by health systems, payors, clients, and families, including:

  • Lower total costs of care;
  • Seamless care experiences;
  • Better individual and population health outcomes;
  • Optimized use of hospital capacity; and
  • More options for home- and community-based care for all consumers, including individuals who require high-acuity, complex, and long-term nursing care.

The initial focus of the new collaboration will be to build out BAYADA’s hospital-at-home capabilities for adult and pediatric health systems, with enhanced solutions such as community-based palliative care, mobile integrated health / community paramedicine, and longitudinal complex chronic care.

“Health systems face so many challenges today from workforce shortages to capacity limitations and patients and families are seeking advanced care at home. By creating new, tech-enabled clinical and operational models, BAYADA and Maribel are collaborating to fully unlock the enormous potential of home-based care as a solution to meet patient, health system, and payor needs,” said Maribel Cofounder Ronald Paulus, MD.

Maribel Cofounder Adam Groff, MD added, “BAYADA is an ideal collaborator given its long-term orientation, operational expertise, strong culture, and scale both geographically and across a broad spectrum of home-based services and diverse patient populations. BAYADA is focused on people, so we are excited to co-create technology and clinical models that put people first.”

“BAYADA has been setting the standard for high-quality complex home care for children and adults living with significant illness or disability for over 45 years,” said BAYADA CEO David Baiada. “We’re excited that this relationship with Maribel will lay the foundation to develop even more home-based acute care programs. With better tools and workflow capacity, BAYADA becomes a stronger collaborator for mission-aligned health systems because we’re able to serve more clients with the safety, comfort, compassion, excellence, and reliability that lead to high satisfaction and quality of life.”

About Maribel Health

In 2021, Ronald Paulus, MD, a health system CEO, and Adam Groff, MD, a home and community services entrepreneur and hospital medicine physician, found they had both reached the same conclusion: In order for health care to respond to inevitable demographic shifts driving patient needs and workforce constraints, much more care would need to move out of hospitals and clinics and into patients’ homes. Together, they founded Maribel Health to design, engineer, and operate the capabilities—including technology, clinical models, and operational management services—that will expand total health system capacity and enable the home and community to be increasingly central to the health care continuum.
