CP Month 2019

During Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month in March, BAYADA is committed to raising awareness and educating the community about this disorder of the developing brain that affects body movement, posture, and muscle coordination. The disorder, which affects thousands of children and adults worldwide, is caused by damage to one or more specific areas of the brain, usually occurring during fetal development; before, during, or shortly after birth; during infancy; or during early childhood.

The effects of cerebral palsy, which can vary from person to person, may include:

  • Muscle tightness or spasticity
  • Disturbance in gait or mobility
  • Involuntary movement
  • Difficulty in swallowing and problems with speech
  • Difficulty in feeding
  • Impairment of sight, hearing, or speech
  • Intellectual or learning disabilities

Home health care nurses can be a beneficial part of an interdisciplinary team approach to treatment which includes the primary care doctor, physician specialists in neurology, pulmonology, and gastroenterology; social workers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech language pathologists.

There is no known cure for cerebral palsy, however, studies have found that children who receive early intervention services such as nursing care, physical and occupational therapy and other support services are more likely to lead an improved quality of life.
